How the Holy Spirit brings change in a believer

‘Now, dear brothers and sisters, regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don’t want you to misunderstand this.
You know that when you were still pagans, you were led astray and swept along in worshiping speechless idols. So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.’ 1 Corinthians 12v1-3

Actually, this aspect of the Holy Spirit’s work  deserves a mini-series to understand all the ways a person benefits through God’s power and presence living within them. However, for today, I will limit this post to the benefit the Spirit brings as to what we value and worship. In the passage, we see that every person faces two states of existence. Either they will
  • worship things that have no value and cede control of their lives in ways that lessens the image of God in them (idols etc) OR
  • invite God’s Holy Spirit into their lives to bring comfort, encouragement and new direction.
Question: Why can no one say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit?
Answer: Because to do this is not a matter of reciting idle words but a declaration of a life decision to commit and follow God.
