Hard as flint or pierced by the Holy Spirit?

‘They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that the Lord Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets. So the Lord Almighty was very angry.’ (Zechariah 7v12)
Okay, after a computer glitch on my websites which made it impossible to send out posts to people, we will in the next few weeks complete our study of understanding the term ‘spirit’ as it occurs in the Old and New Testaments in the Bible.
As you remember- but then maybe not – there are three distinctions made in regard to how the term ‘Spirit’ is understood and used in the Bible.
1. Spirit – God’s Holy Spirit  – part of Godhead, hovering over creation and (since Pentecost) living within believers to assist and enable them in their life as they people about God.
2. Spirit – before  the birth of Christ – God’s Spirit is understood to rest on a person (though not enter within them) to guide and direct them in a specific task they have been singles out to do for God.
3. spirit – note the lack of a capital letter – which relates to the human experience  and emotions in which a person describes how their ‘spirit was crushed.’ In other words, not from God but themselves as they detail the high or low they are experiencing as a result of actions happening to them.
In Zechariah 7v12 we see immediately that Zechariah is referencing the distinction between the early prophets who were responsive to God’s Holy Spirit and the state of those  who refused to listen and rejected Him (God).
All of which means we need to be always mindful as to whether we are being obedient to God or doing are own thing. God bless you (and me) as we attempt to walk in that path.
Til next time.

Spiritual awareness and obedience to God?

‘Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?’                                  (Psalm 139v7)
David’s reference to God’s ‘Spirit’ in this psalm appears to be something akin to an inescapable omniscience that hems him in at every turn.  Of course, there is an issue with this in that  although David’s sense of God’s presence is so tangible that he experiences it in a physical reality, others do not experience it in such a way. Which begs the question…
Why doesn’t everyone in the world have the same experience of God as David?
If possible,  how does one nurture and cultivate their relationship with God so that they also have a similar spiritual experience that manifests itself in an overwhelming and embracing way?
Moreover, is this experience linked to the person’s calling and depth of experience of  responding to God and being oppedient to thet call?
Now, while there are many factors to consider here, one explanation regarding God’s spiritual presence within the person relates to their openess to receiving the Holy Spirit. Or put more simply, their willingness to be obedient to what God is calling them to do as noted by many Christian teachers but most notably Watchman Nee’s ‘Release of the Spirit’, The Spiritual Man’ etc.
So, in summary,  our spiritual experience will increase as we go deeper with God but with that there also comes the call to a greater obedience and relationship with God.

Ever wondered why churches fail to grow spiritually?

But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. “Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy;  now you have received God’s mercy.’ 1 Peter 2v9-10

In this passage we see how a people with no identity become  known as the ‘people of God.’ The task given to them was to show God’s goodness to those outside the Church and lead others from darkness into light. Straightforward so far. However, unlike every living creature in this world that goes through the stages of birth and growth, this is not always guaranteed for people when they become Christian. Yes,  spiritual birth occurs but the growth that ought follow may not where they refuse to engage with the Holy Spirit of God. There are many reasons this happens but most often it’s an  ignorance about spiritual gifts or reluctance to engage with the faith they’ve undertaken.

In the same way that an infant’s growth will falter as he continues to refuse food offered to him,  so too spiritual growth will falter in communities where they quench the Holy Spirit and/or do not keep pace with Him . Very often this occurs when individuals no longer engage with their spiritual gifts but can also occur due to a lack of understanding about the spiritual elements of their faith.

Question: Why do some churches fail to grow spiritually?

Answer:    Lack of spiritual engagement within the community.

Want to grow spiritually?

There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are….believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right.  Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.’ Hebrews 5v11-15

Want to grow spiritually? It all starts here! Or rather, it starts when we determine  to be obedient to God and scripture. As we do this, we discover our spiritual gifts. Moreover,  we find that one particular spiritual gift that stands out from among the many.  A particular gift God wants us to use which is often referred to as our primary spiritual gift.

Now, some might say: ‘But Bob, I don’t know my spiritual gifts?’  Don’t fret! Take the  spiritual gift test  using either an app, e-book or  print copy (UK only) of ‘Know your spiritual gifts’  and begin a spiritual journey of a lifetime as you build God’s church.

All the best!
