Spiritual Gift Definition – what makes a pastor?

Three questions to identify your primary gift (taken from ‘Know your spiritual gifts.’)

‘In Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith;  if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach;  if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. Romans 12v5-8.

Those with the spiritual gift of sympathy (rendered as ‘mercy’ in v8) make for good Pastors. They spend time with people who are struggling or upset, and notice when a person is not at church. They possess empathetic skills and will utilise a variety of ways of contacting people through visiting, phoning, sending cards, enquiring through others, etc. Pastors are a listening ear, friendly face and concerned prayer.
